The official John Ellison church crawl
Aug. 7th, 2009 10:52 amOnce a year we take John off to visit interesting churches that he would find difficult to get to by himself. Over the course of several years we have been to Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Northamtonshire and, over a long weekend in 2007, Wiltshire, Somerset and Devon. Because we had to miss 2008, we have extended this year's tour to include a night in Hay-on-Wye so that we can make it up to John for cancelling 2008 at short notice.

Generally it comes down to whittling the list down to about 12 or so that are achievable within the time frame. We decided to stay over in Hay-on-Wye as that would give us a chance to visit a few bookshops whilst the churches were busy on Sunday morning.
Two of the ones that are on the must see list are Moccas and Monington-on-Wye as John's grandfather was vicar at them about 70 years ago. I always take my copy of the good beer guide to find a suitable pub for lunch. This is fine for Annie and John but as the driver I cannot participate. Whatever the weather these crawls have always been entertaining and I've seen some bits of the country that I would never have visited before.
