AKICOLJ - digital cameras
Oct. 6th, 2010 10:21 pmI'm in the process of upgrading from an Olympus mju 800 to something more capable when going off to gawp at dead Egyptians and their buildings.
apademek uses a Canon G11 and it takes excellent pictures - much better than the Olympus. Canon have now released the G12 which is an improved version of the G11. I have been dithering between this and the new Nikon D3100. Both have an ISO sensitivity of 12,800, the G12 is fully integrated, the D3100 is larger but has the option of interchangeable lenses.
The D3100 is new, it was released in September and I have concerns over the availability of lenses. It is supposed to be sold as body only, body plus 18-55mm lens, body plus 55-200mm lens or various combinations of these lenses. So far, all I have seen is the kit with the 18-55mm lens. Having somewhat more zoom would be nice to capture distant details. There appear to be odd Tamron or Sigma lenses that may fit but I would need to call them to check this (and would the answer i got be believable?).
The things I feel are important are

The things I feel are important are
- ability to take pictures in low light
- wide angle operation - I used a 24mm lens on my old film camera
- macro
- ability to charge the battery in a vehicle.
Things that are unimportant:
- having more megapixels than I can shake a stick at
- being able to shoot at many frames per second (buildings don't run around much).
- shooting motion
- contrast stacking.
