It having been some time since I posted anything.

A good many years ago, maybe more than 30, I read the Dr. Syn series of books by Russell Thorndike. Or rather, most of the series. I found odd copies here and there in second hand bookshops and gradually got up to 6 out of the 7 that the author wrote. I never managed to get hold of the book that was sixth in the series, The Shadow Of Dr. Syn. Most of the time I had forgotten about the books and whenever I found odd copies, I couldn't remember which one I hadn't got. The most annoying time was when I was in Dymchurch, Kent, where the series is set, and the local gift shop had copies of the books, but I didn't know which one I was missing. Rather than buying the whole series, I decided to make a note and look for it later.

I never got back to Dymchurch.

Then came the internet and the wonders of ABE and Alibris. Whenever I remembered, I would type the details in to see if anyone had a copy for sale. Very occasionally, hardback copies would appear at extortionate prices. The last week, I was doing a tad of book shopping, looking for suitable archaeological references for a proposed trip to Vietnam and I typed in "Russell Thorndike". At last, a paperback copy, in good condition, but for £10. I bought it on the assumption that I wouldn't find another copy for years.

Because it's been 20+ years since I read the other 6, I'm wondering now whether I should read books 1 to 5 before starting on book 6.
